The Society of Friends of the Concertgebouw and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
'The society aims to stimulate the blossoming of a musical life in the form as manifested in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and in this regard works to encourage, enliven and keep alive an interest in good music. This quotation is taken from the statutes of the Society of Friends of the Concertgebouw and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, which was formally established on 27 July 1937. With more than 13.000 members, the society is today one of the largest associations of its kind in the Netherlands. Which is not surprising given that the Concertgebouw and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra are two major artistic institutions that have been responsible for conveying the quality of Dutch musical life far beyond the country's borders. The Society of Friends of the Concertgebouw and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra attempts to encourage and strengthen the contact between the performing musicians and their audience. It does so in part during special Friends activities such as the Friends Series and the Friends Concours for young musicians.
