‘I have a feeling that the world is open to me. For a composer, there are not many opportunities like this, and places where you can go and seek new influences and ideas’
The Finnish composer Sebastian Fagerlund is the second composer in residence of The Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. As composer in residence Sebastian will be truly ‘in residence’. He will reside in Amsterdam for a total of three months, split between the autumn of 2016 and the spring of 2017. During his residency, he will not only immerse himself in Amsterdam and Dutch culture, but he will also share Finnish culture. Among other activities, he will hold a workshop with Dutch young composers and collaborate on special performances of his music by students of the Conservatorium of Amsterdam. To crown his residency, two new works by Sebastian Fagerlund will be premiered in 2017 and 2018. Works inspired by his stay in Amsterdam.
Sebastian Fagerlund has established himself as one of the most prominent European composers of his generation. He studied composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki under the guidance of Erkki Jokinen and received his diploma in composition in 2004. Important aspects of Fagerlund’s work are his interest in large-scale forms and a profound view of music expressing fundamental questions and existential experiences. Fagerlund was described in BBC Music Magazine as displaying 'boundless technical resource at the service of a considerable imagination.' A highly virtuosic instrumental feel and strong sense of musicianship is noticeable in all of his works, creating musical dramas in which powerful expression is combined with intensity and vivid communication, as well as an openness towards different musical traditions.
Composer in residence
Sebastian Fagerlund is the second composer in residence of The Royal Concertgebouw. The Concertgebouw's composer in residence is a new tradition that started in 2015. The concept is simple: international composer are offered a true residency. These composers will be invited to live in the city for a longer period. In this way they will have the opportunity to find new inspiration and to compose new music that will be premiered at The Concertgebouw. It is thanks to a special foundation, which is part of the Concertgebouwfonds, that this project is possible. In this way The Concertgebouw continues its long tradition of supporting modern classical music.
