A Night at the Opera
Love, friendship, fidelity and betrayal: just the ingredients for A Night at the Opera. Tenors Lawrence Brownlee and Michael Spyres will perform dazzling arias and duets bursting with passion, jealousy and rage. Accompanied by Residentie Orkest The Hague, they’ll sing highlights from timeless classics like The Pearl Fishers. They’ll also sing selections from some lesser-known but no less dramatic operas. From Hálevy’s Jewess to Auber’s mute princess, there are plenty of women who inspire tenors to great heights!
Brownlee and Spyres sing Rossini and more
America’s two most prominent tenors, Lawrence Brownlee and Michael Spyres, are joining forces. Both work in a very wide range of repertoire, and since both are also bel canto specialists, the accent of this opera gala is on Rossini. You’ll hear selections from Otello, the exotic Zelmira and of course Guillaume Tell. Brownlee and Spyres are rivals for the same woman in Ricciardo e Zoraide, and they celebrate friendship in Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers. There is spectacle in Cherubini’s Ali Baba, passion in an aria from Bellini’s Il Pirata. Residentie Orkest The Hague will be conducted by Michael Balke, who according to Deutschlandradio will guarantee some ‘musical gooseflesh’.
