Iván Fischer explains: ‘To me is ‘Mitleid’, compassion, the central theme of Bach’s St Matthew Passion. By observing the suffering of Christ, the listeners feel the compassion which they share with each other and connects them. We want to translate the suffering of Christ to the suffering we know today. There was an unimaginable amount of suffering in the Second World War. But we want also to give thought to the suffering that is happening today in Syria and the brutal injustice which people in a lot of other countries have to bear.
