Klaus Mäkelä & Concertgebouw Orchestra in Stravinsky's Sacre
Archora (Nederlandse première)
Piano Concerto No. 5 in F major, op. 103 'Egyptian'
The Rite of Spring
Conducted by Klaus Mäkelä, the Concertgebouw Orchestra performs Stravinsky’s groundbreaking Rite of Spring and beautiful, unearthly music by Thorvaldsdóttir. Jean-Yves Thibaudet performs as soloist in Saint-Saëns’s Fifth Piano Concerto.
Klaus Mäkelä conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in two twentieth-century classics. In 1913, Igor Stravinsky’s ballet music for The Rite of Spring shook the world of music to its core. After a famously riotous concert in Paris, this innovative work quickly assumed its rightful place on the concert stage. Stravinsky’s bold sound collages, pounding, angular rhythms and sharp contrasts were not only ultramodern but also very catchy. And The Rite of Spring continues to capture the hearts of successive generations of music lovers.
The French master pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet is back to perform his compatriot Camille Saint-Saëns’s Fifth Piano Concerto. Composed in Luxor, this ‘Egyptian’ piano concerto is brimming with the impressions made on the composer by his many travels. Hailing from Iceland, Anna Thorvaldsdóttir is fast becoming one of the most successful composers of the century. Her music is of an unearthly, mystical beauty.
