Serenade in C major
Twelve microludes, op. 13
Tristia, Vallée d’Obermann
String Trio (in memoriam Christophe Desjardins)
Five outstanding musicians from the Concertgebouw Orchestra serve a varied Hungarian menu featuring music by Liszt, Dohnányi, Bartók, Kurtág and Eötvös
Melancholy, unbridled passion and a special attention to rhythm are all characteristic of Hungarian music. The works on this programme share these, however different their styles may be. From Dohnányi’s Romantic Serenade for string trio to the desolate music of Liszt’s Tristia and from the folk melodies in Bartók’s early Piano Quintet to Kurtág’s perfectly cut musical diamonds: we hear the expansive puszta and the Hungarian soul in every note. The same is true of the late, expressive String Trio by Peter Eötvös, who conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra on multiple occasions before his death in 2024.
Musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra perform their own programmes in the Recital Hall as part of the Close-up chamber music series. Each of these concerts is unique and performed only once as part of the series. It’s the very best way to experience the individual qualities of the orchestral musicians! These intimate concerts are organised by the Friends of the Concertgebouw and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
