Overture 'Die Hebriden', op. 26
Violin Concerto No. 2 (Nederlandse première)
Fantasie
Symphony No. 5 in d minor, op. 107 'Reformation'
The composer, conductor and clarinettist Jörg Widmann leads the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture and Fifth Symphony (‘Reformation’) as well as his own music. Carolin Widmann appears as soloist in the Dutch premiere of his Second Violin Concerto.
Known for his versatility, Jörg Widmann is one of the most important musicians of our time. And the Concertgebouw Orchestra is delighted that he is conducting the orchestra. In addition to his own music, Widmann is conducting compositions by his musical predecessor Felix Mendelssohn. The concert opens with the atmospheric Overture Die Hebriden, inspired by the magic of the Scottish isles. While on his British adventure, Mendelssohn also started work on the Fifth Symphony, nicknamed the 'Reformation'. The Jewish-Protestant composer would incorporate Lutheran and Catholic elements into this heartfelt plea for reconciliation and tolerance. Above all, though, it is beautiful music that deserves to be performed and heard more often.
Jörg Widmann himself is performing his Fantasie for solo clarinet, while the virtuosic and very personal Second Violin Concerto also features his sister, the leading violinist Carolin Widmann to whom he dedicated the work, as soloist.
