In Richard Strauss’ heroic epic tone poem Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life), a hero both vanquishes his adversaries and finds love. Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody is the opposite, written as a wedding gift from the composer to his beloved, who was marrying someone else. Karina Canellakis will take ‘her’ Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Netherlands Radio Choir to great heights.
