As the son of a Belgian missionary who was sent to Japan in the 1970s and a Japanese peace activist, pianist and composer Alex Koo refuses to be pigeonholed. Or, as the renowned German Jazzthetik puts it: 'Alex Koo is uncategorizable'. His album Blame It on My Chromosomes was released in early 2025 to enthusiastic reviews from the press and public. Tonight, the trio behind this album, featuring bassist Lennart Heyndels and drummer Dré Pallemaerts, will perform an intimate, idiosyncratic, and compelling concert in our Choir Hall.

Alex Koo

Pianist and composer Alex Koo effortlessly blends jazz and contemporary classical music with elements of film music and even indie. The result is "astonishingly original," according to the renowned American Downbeat Jazz Magazine. Born and raised in West Flanders, Koo began his musical career at the age of five as a classical child prodigy. Later, in his teens, he developed a passion for jazz and improvisation, quickly earning praise from jazz legends such as Kurt Elling, Kenny Werner, and Brad Mehldau. In February 2025, Koo's album Blame It on My Chromosomes was released. On this album, Koo plays together with his long-standing trio, which guarantees musical fireworks. The group, with Koo on piano, Dré Pallemaerts on drums, and Lennart Heyndels on bass, represents 'the best of Belgian jazz'.

Blame It on My Chromosomes

With ten unique personal tracks, Blame It on My Chromosomes is more than a musical statement: it is a form of self-therapy. "The only way to avoid depression as a jazz musician these days is to vent and surrender yourself to your music," says Koo. "Music must have a deeper meaning than self-promotion. For me, it's about accepting who I am and letting go of everything else." For this album, Koo collaborated with internationally acclaimed trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, who plays on two tracks.
