In Nieuwe Blik Terug, musician, presenter and documentary maker Orville Breeveld puts the spotlight on composers and musicians who are unjustly overlooked. This edition of Nieuwe Blik Terug (New Perspective) focuses on Armenian composers, with Soghomon Gevorgi Soghomonian, better known as Komitas (1869-1935), as its shining centrepiece. This priest, composer, choir director and ethnomusicologist avant la lettre devoted his life to collecting and studying Armenian folk melodies, which he wanted to elevate to art music.
