Dutch Jazz Heritage: Surinamese Jazz & Kid Dynamite

Musicians

  • Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw
  • Efraim Trujillo tenor saxophone
  • Ronald Snijders flute
  • This concert has no intermission

With the Dutch Jazz Heritage series, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw puts the spotlight on legendary (Dutch) jazz moments and jazz artists, in collaboration with the Dutch Jazz Archive. During this concert, the orchestra delves into the work of Surinamese tenor saxophonist Kid Dynamite, who settled in the Netherlands. Kid Dynamite caused a sensation from the 1930s onwards: 'He belongs to that class of musicians who persevere and are not satisfied with the first round of applause,' stated the monthly magazine De Jazzwereld as early as 1937. He subsequently enjoyed great fame in the 1950s as a musician at the Casablanca Jazz Club on Amsterdam's Zeedijk. The Jazz Orchestra has invited the versatile saxophonist Efraïm Trujillo to delve into the work of Kid Dynamite this evening. Trujillo was the saxophonist for the renowned Surinamese group Fra Fra Sound for many years. In 2001, he worked as an arranger on Hans Hylkema's documentary Kid Dynamite – Surinamese Swing on the Zeedijk about the life and music of Kid Dynamite.

Jazz and pop music

It goes without saying that The Concertgebouw and jazz & pop music make a perfect combination. The stages of both the Main Hall and the Recital Hall have borne witness to nearly the whole of jazz history. Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald have both performed here, as have Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong. Famous pop stars and bands that have graced the stage of the Main Hall include Frank Zappa, the Doors and the Eagles, to name but a few. Legendary concerts, in the present as well as the past.
