Next year, 2027, marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Ludwig van Beethoven. In that year, pianist Misha Fomin will complete his prestigious Beethoven project: recording and performing the complete cycle of the composer’s thirty-two piano sonatas. The program of this concert features two sonatas by Beethoven: the surprising Grande Sonate, Op. 7 and the lyrical two-movement Sonata 'Für Thérèse', Op. 78. After the intermission, Fomin will perform two masterpieces from the Romantic era: Franz Schubert’s beautiful Impromptu and Johannes Brahms’s fiendishly difficult Paganini Variations.
With playing rich in tonal nuance and a full, warm sound, the pianist embodies the Russian piano tradition. Fomin is currently working on the Beethoven project, in which he is recording all thirty-two piano sonatas by Beethoven. Opus 7 is an early work by Beethoven in which playfulness, sparkling energy, and humor abound. Sonata 'Für Thérèse', Op. 78 stands out for its refinement, lyricism, and clarity.
In the Impromptu with Variations, Schubert uses an original theme, creating a work full of tension, emotion, beautiful melodies, and shimmering passagework. Brahms based his Variations on a famous theme by Niccolò Paganini from Caprice No. 24. Although the work is renowned for its extreme technical difficulty - Clara Schumann reportedly called them 'witch variations' for that reason - behind the virtuosity lies harmonic depth and musical creativity. Fomin has made his own selection of variations from Book I and Book II.
