Using the historic Concertgebouw as a starting point, sixteen artists explored sound as a communal and spatially dynamic experience, collecting sound materials from inside and outside The Concertgebouw, and experimented with manipulating and re-composing sounds in space. These sonic experiments will resonate uniquely within the acoustics of the Kleine Zaal for an intimate listening session. They are inspired by the theory and practice of sound pioneers like Pauline Oliveros, the writings of Jacek Smolicki on Transversal Listening, and a collective guided approach to spatial sound composition.
The compositions you will hear were created by a dynamic group of makers during the workshop Space as a Collective Sonic Instrument, designed by artists Robin Koek and Fani Konstantinidou. The artists questions such as: How does our awareness of space affect our listening perspective? Which aural spaces emerge through an act of collective acoustic practice? Can we become recomposed through the spaces we listen in?
As part of the programme on December 12th, composer and engineer Marijn Cinjee will give a brief introduction to the awe-inspiring 4DSOUND spatial sound system, and Robin Koek will discuss the creative approach to spatial sound as an emerging artistic field.
Are you curious about spatial sound as a new creative medium, and eager to experience sound in new ways? Or are you a student or professional interested in learning about the latest spatial audio developments? Then this listening session is for you! It provides a unique and intimate combination between a listening experience and an introduction into the making process with the 4DSOUND system.
Especially for this festival, chairs are removed from the hall so that visitors can move freely through the space, sitting or lying down. Rugs and cushions are also available. More information

The familiar red plush chairs will make way for a 4DSOUND installation, consisting of 13 pillars with 41 speakers. Classical acoustic methods are combined with the modern technology of 4DSOUND, further expanding the possibilities of sound experience.
Aural Spaces explores the boundaries between sound and space, blurring them and merging them. The result is a completely immersive listening experience that’s all too rare. Discover and feel how the music moves through space!
