During the Dutch Jazz Heritage series, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw spotlights legendary artists and performances in Dutch jazz, in collaboration with the Dutch Jazz Archive. Tonight, the orchestra plays a tribute concert to Art Blakey, one of the greatest drummers in American jazz. Blakey was among the inventors of bebop drumming. In November of 1959, he performed in The Concertgebouw with his band the ‘Jazz Messengers’, which included trumpet player Lee Morgan and tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Special guest during this tribute is jazz pianist Rein de Graaff: he will perform with the JOC as a soloist and will talk (in Dutch) about his personal connection with Art Blakey.

Jazz and pop music

It goes without saying that The Concertgebouw and jazz & pop music make a perfect combination. The stages of both the Main Hall and the Recital Hall have borne witness to nearly the whole of jazz history. Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald have both performed here, as have Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong. Famous pop stars and bands that have graced the stage of the Main Hall include Frank Zappa, the Doors and the Eagles, to name but a few. Legendary concerts, in the present as well as the past.
