Russian composer Dimitri Shostakovich’s life and work was and is inextricably linked with twentieth-century history, politics and cultural history and in particular the regime and culture of the Soviet Union. The podcast Betrouwbare Bronnen (‘reliable sources’) and The Concertgebouw will bring together music and political history in an evening devoted to 'music and tyranny’. Host Jaap Jansen and PG Kroeger will explore this theme in greater depth. The music is in the hands of the Arethusa Quartet, whose violinist Daniel Rowland is a Shostakovich expert par excellence.
