Open Jewish Homes - Sisters Babs and Edith Musaph (in Dutch)
Open Jewish Homes - Sisters Babs and Edith Musaph (in Dutch)
This concert has no intermission
In 1942, the Jewish sisters Babs and Edith Musaph decided to flee Amsterdam. Along the way, Tox (Rebecca) Waterman joined them. Together, the group of women in their twenties crossed France, were imprisoned, were released, and were eventually able to board the ship Nyassa bound for Suriname. There, they were interned alongside other refugees in an old Chinese clubhouse. After leaving the camp, they wanted to join the resistance. Via New York, they eventually reached London, where they became members of the Women’s Auxiliary Corps. Historian Rosa de Jong will speak about these remarkable women in the Choir Hall of The Concertgebouw, opposite the house where the sisters grew up.
Please note: this lecture will be in Dutch.
This programme is part of Open Houses: Jewish Homes | Houses of Resistance, a programme organised by the National Holocaust Museum and the Amsterdam 4 and 5 May Committee. During the Open Jewish Homes | Houses of Resistance programme, the history of Jewish Amsterdam and the Second World War is recounted in the very places where it unfolded: in living rooms, cafés and classrooms, survivors and descendants share their personal stories. An intimate programme where you see history come to life right before your eyes, and where stories are supplemented on the spot by former residents, neighbours and experts.
