With Echoes of the Balkans, Ciconia – The Hague String Orchestra, together with the young star violinist Hawijch Elders, presents a programme brimming with folklore, melancholy and virtuosity. Join us on a journey back to the nineteenth century, when composers discovered their musical roots and were inspired by folk melodies that had echoed through the mountainous Balkans for centuries. Rhythmic richness, daring harmonies and ancient keys resonate in works by Bartók, Enescu and Liszt. Enescu had a keen interest in Romani violin playing. His virtuoso Romanian Rhapsody receives a breathtaking performance by Hawijch Elders. Alongside Bartók’s monumental Divertimento, lesser-known gems by Beliczay and the famous conductor Weingartner are also featured.
