Ciconia - The Hague String Orchestra & Hawijch Elders: Echoes of the Balkans

Folk melodies

Travel back to the nineteenth century, when composers began exploring their musical roots and drawing inspiration from folk melodies that had echoed through the mountainous Balkans for centuries. Rich rhythms, daring harmonies and ancient modes come to life in works by Bartók, Enescu and Liszt. Enescu was deeply fascinated by Romani violin traditions. His virtuosic Romanian Rhapsody receives a special interpretation by Hawijch Elders. Alongside Bartók’s monumental Divertimento, the programme features lesser-known gems by Beliczay and the celebrated conductor Weingartner.
